7 tips from the world’s most successful business men and women

1. Love and enjoy what you do

Starting a business is a daunting task and requires a huge amount of work and time. There are also no guarantees that it will be a success the first time around. Therefore it is important to choose something in line with your personal interests. When you make your job your passion, it will never seem like work, like they say “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

2. Don’t be intimidated out of your dream

When you start a business and begin your climb the ladder, there will always be naysayers and people trying to discourage you. It is therefore imperative to develop a thick skin and never mind the naysayer’s attitude and continue to do what you are doing because chances are that those naysayers are the ones who are worried most. Tenacity along with a strong work ethic is vital in making considerable strides toward success.

3. Keep it simple

We all have many talents, but the key to a successful business is becoming an expert in a specific field that everyone will know you for. Instead of offering many options, which may lead to overpromising and underdelivering, rather focus on the quality and execution of one. By identifying that niche, you have more time to create something that stands out and will give you an end goal in becoming significant in the market.

4. Listen more than you talk

To become a good leader you need to be able to listen well and to understand what your employees are telling you. It is one thing to listen, but to listen attentively when someone speaks you are able to gather greater information about them and what they are saying. Another thing about listening is that great ideas can spring from anywhere, so you should always keep your ears open. Listening in the technological age also means reading comments which are important to your business because at the end of the day it’s all about the customer.

5. Start again

When starting your business, chances are most likely that you won’t crack it the first time round. Failure comes with the territory – the important thing is how you learn from them. Don’t be afraid to rip up your original idea and start again making the necessary amendments from your ‘failing curve’. If it means you have to fail again, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, find the positives, analyse where you can and then try again.

6. Be proud of your work

You are bound to receive negative feedback, and the one person that you can and should rely on is yourself! If you don’t believe in your service, how do you expect others to? By being a firm believer in your work, you instil that sort of belief in your staff who is your greatest brand advocates. They are a product of your company, and the way they interact with others mentioning your brand is an ideal benchmark.

7. Have fun

The moment you wake up and feel like what you are doing is a chore; then it’s time to try something else. If you are having a good time, the chances are that a positive and innovative atmosphere will be created for your business to flourish. It is important to be able to see the lighter side of life, because if you aren’t having fun, then you are doing it wrong.
